British television newsreader and broadcaster Carol Barnes worked for ITN for almost three decades, from 1975 to 2004. After holding other communications positions like public relations officer for the Royal Court Theatre and sub-editor for Time Out magazine, she began working at Independent Radio News. She was part of the original news team when radio station LBC launched in 1973, then worked for a year as a BBC Radio 4 reporter.
At ITN, Barnes covered the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the 1979 return of the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran and the 1981 Brixton riots, and started as a newscaster in 1980 on the News at 5:45. From 1985 to 1989 and 1991 to 1998, she was a regular presenter on the ITN Lunchtime News and ITN’s weekend news bulletins. In between those stints, she was a presenter of the Channel 4 Daily breakfast programme. She regularly appears on the ITN flagship News at Ten program and other current affairs programs. In 1994, she was voted Newscaster of the Year at the TV and Radio Industries Club Awards.
