Greek singer and politician Nana Mouskouri has released approximately 450 albums in more than a dozen languages, including Greek, French, English, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Hebrew, Welsh, Mandarin and Corsican. She rose to international prominence with her 1961 German version of “The White Rose of Athens,” her first record to sell more than a million copies. Two years later, she represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest with “À force de prier,” finishing eighth. She also presented her own television show for the BBC from 1968 to 1976, Presenting Nana Mouskouri. Other major hits included 1981’s “Je chante avec toi Liberté” and “Only Love,” recorded in 1984 as the theme song for the television show Mistral’s Daughter.
In 1993, Mouskouri became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, travelling to Bosnia to raise awareness about children impacted by the Bosnian war and giving fundraising concerts in Sweden and Belgium. The following year, she was elected to represent Greece as a Member of the European Parliament, serving until 1999.
