Anne-Marie Adiaffi

Born: 1951, Côte d’Ivoire
Died: 1994
Country most active: Côte d’Ivoire
Also known as: NA

Ivorian writer Anne-Marie Adiaffi came to international fame with the 1984 novel Une vie hypothéquée (A Mortgaged Life), followed by La Ligne Brisee (The Broken Line) in 1989. According to the article “Ivorian Women and the Pen,” published in Fraternité Matin in 1997, Adiaffi “suffered even more upon the release of her first novel, Une vie hypothéquée (NEA, 1984): Accused of plagiarism by a certain Zodekon and of name usurpation by Jean-Marie Adiaffi, she owed her literary survival only to her strength of character, publishing a second novel, La ligne brisée (NEA, 1989). She even had a third book in progress when death took her in 1994. What is certain is that Anne-Marie Adiaffi was one of the leading figures of the second generation of Ivorian women writers, following the pioneers Simone Kaya, Fatou Bolli, and another, sadly missed, Jeanne de Cavally.”
