Claudine of Monaco

Born: 1415 (circa), Monaco
Died: 19 November 1515
Country most active: Monaco
Also known as: NA

Claudine, also known as Claudia, was the nominal ruler of Monaco from 1457 to 1458 as Lady regnant, before marrying her distant cousin Lord Lambert of Monaco and becoming Lady consort. The only child of Catalan Grimaldi, she was allowed to inherit from her father when he died, with her grandmother, Pomellina Fregoso, named as regent until Claudine came of age. As she was just six years old at the time, her then-fiance Lambert – who was in his later 30s – demanded he be given the regent’s powers, then deposed and imprisoned Pomellina and declared himself the Lord of Monaco. He married the teenaged Claudine in 1465, and she went on to have at least nine, and possibly as many as fourteen, children. Their son Jean inherited when Lambert died in 1494, only to be murdered by his brother and successor Lucien in 1505 – reputedly, with Claudine present.
