Agnes of Burgundy

Born: 995 (circa), France
Died: 10 November 1068
Country most active: France
Also known as: Agnes de Macon

Agnes of Burgundy was Duchess of Aquitaine and Countess of Poitou by her first marriage to Duke William V from 1019 to 1030, and Countess of Anjou by marriage to Count Geoffrey II from 1032 to 1038. She had three children from her first marriage, and served as regent of Aquitaine for her minor son from 1039 to 1044. However, her first husband had also left behind heirs from a previous marriage, and Agnes and Geoffrey invaded Poitou, capturing her eldest stepson, William’s successor, who died in 1038 without siring children. Her next stepson inherited, and was killed in battle soon after. This left Agnes’s son to inherit the county of Poitou and duchy of Aquitaine. She also arranged for her daughter, also named Agnes, to marry the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III. She founded two abbeys in Poitou, Sainte-Marie-des-Dames and Saint Nicolas de Poitou.
