Margaret Caroline Anderson is best known as the founder, editor and publisher of the avant-garde art and literary magazine The Little Review, which published contemporary American, English and Irish writers from 1914 to 1929. In addition to promoting writers like Ezra Pound, Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, and T. S. Eliot, the Review published the first 13 chapters of James Joyce’s Ulysses.
Anderson also had romantic relationships with several women, including Jane Heap (1916-1929), Georgette Leblanc (1929-1941) and Dorothy Caruso (1942-1955). Heap was also a co-editor of The Little Review, which ceased publication just months after the couple split. In 1921, they faced an obscenity trial over The Little Review’s content, and were eventually fined $100 each.
