The following is excerpted from a 2025 interview with Dr. Zoë Burgess, Senior Research Fellow at the University of West London’s London School of Film, Media and Design, and Film Curator at Wessex Film and Sound Archive.
Dorothy Bacon was single at the time of death and her works are firmly linked to her. She was active in the 1930s and 1940s and into the ‘50s actually. She and her father actually put on screenings in the local area, at the local village hall for local children, and she was very active in the women’s institute as well. So her filmmaking intersects with her role within the women’s institute. She was quite a strong leading figure in the area, so I think she was a secretary for the local women’s institute and she also served during the Second World War in the ATS, and she took her camera away with her on some of her travels. So some of her films record this as well. So she is really interesting as a character.
