Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), in Awka in southern Nigeria, has a number of female chemical engineering academics and alumnae who specialise in reducing the effects of industrial effluents. Dr Philomena Kanwulia Igbokwe (b. circa 1961) got her BSc and early practical experience in industry in Bulgaria. She returned to Nigeria for her PhD and to take up her academic career, in the field of industrial waste treatment. Appointed professor in Chemical Engineering (NAU) in 2006, she is thought to be the first woman to reach this level in Nigeria as well as the first female Dean of a Faculty of Engineering in Nigeria (2012).
