The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.
As in other nations, it seems that women in chemical engineering may be mainly in academia rather than in the Indian chemical industries. Female CEOs and in other senior roles in the chemical industries, such as Sanchita Banerjee, Engineering Director, Oil India (Accenture Vaahini), and Bijal Mathkar, Research & Innovation Director at Solvay India, spoke at a conference on the ‘Role of women in the growth of the Indian chemical industry’ on the barriers they had met and what they are doing to bring more women on within their companies. Mathkar is an example of the younger generation of female chemical engineers who worked their way up to the top from graduate-entry (2006) process engineer.
