Considered to be the first woman to receive an engineering diploma (1904) in the Netherlands, as the first female student at TUDelft, Maria Elisabeth (Marie) Stellwag-Bes (1882-1938) qualified in chemical engineering and taught at TUDelft until 1926. She was also active in, and elected to the municipal council on behalf of, the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (Liberal Democratic League)
