The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

Margareta Nicolau BSc, PhD (1945-2013) graduated in 1968 from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest the Organic and gained her PhD late in her career (2010). She is considered most notable for her work in the field of synthesis and characterization of acrylic compounds, much of which has been subsequently implemented in industry. From 1982 she worked at the Research and Design Institute for Wastewater Treatment (ICPEAR) – now the National Research and Development Institute for Industrial Ecology (ECOIND)on the pollution problems connected to petrochemical and other industries, metallurgy etc. The hundreds of projects which she oversaw led in many cases to the development of policies and strategies for the most important industrial sectors in Romania, as well as over 200 papers and 24 patents. She was particularly known for her encouragement of the careers of her subordinates.
