As well as seeing Mamata Mukhopadhyay reach the rank of professor in chemical engineering, the 1980s was also when other Indian women started to join her in the field. An example is Mannepalli Lakshmi Kantam, who obtained her PhD degree in chemical engineering from Kurukshetra University, India in 1982. She then joined the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology Hyderabad, as a Scientist B (1984) and her subsequent career has seen her progress to head of its Inorganic and Physical Chemistry Division. She has received numerous awards and has authored more than 353 publications and 42 patents.
