More typical of the opportunities in resource-rich Nigeria are the careers of women in the petrochemical and related industries. Deborah Danladi, process engineer was LafargeHolcim-owned AshakaCem’s first female engineer when she joined them in 2015 with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maiduguri. She was a control room operator overseeing cement processing from the quarry to bagging and later Health, Safety & Environment Manager for Maiganga Coal Mine. Her achievement is all the more remarkable, growing up and working in the north of Nigeria, its most socially conservative area with constant threats to women from Boko Haram.
