The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

Despite being one of the most industrially developed nations in Africa, the examples of women in chemical engineering seem to be entirely very recent. South Africa shares with most parts of the world the sad fact that women are paid less than men for the same work in chemical engineering, typically 11% less. (World Salaries). Probably one of the most senior women chemical engineers in academia is Professor Diane Hildebrandt, currently Director of the Institute for the Development of Energy for African Sustainability, and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of South Africa. She gained her BSc (1981), MSc (1983) and PhD (1989) from the University of Witwatersrand and she researches waste to energy technologies, process, reactor and separation system syntheses, and biotechnology for biogas production and water remediation.
