The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.

When Mary Sherman Morgan died in 2004, her son George submitted an obituary for her to the Los Angeles Times, which they “refused to print […] on the grounds they could not verify any of its information,” he later recalled. Mary, the only female engineer among 900 rocket scientists at North American Aviation in the early 1950s, invented hydyne, the rocket fuel that successfully boosted America’s first satellite into orbit in 1958. This spurred George to write a stage play and popular non-fiction biography, Rocket Girl: The Story of Mary Sherman Morgan, to ensure her legacy would not be lost.
