The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.
Many women who have been written off as just a muse, or whose own work fell by the wayside so they could support the men, later reclaimed their identities or have since been rediscovered as artists in their own right. 1960s It Girl Edie Sedgewick was famous as Andy Warhol’s muse and actress in his films. Her untimely death at age twenty-eight of a drug overdose cut short any promise she may have shown as an artist herself, and her paintings, drawings, and sculptures as an artist in her own right weren’t made public until they went up for auction in 2022.
