Cathy Perkins on Zora Cross transcript
The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.
When Australian writer Zora Cross submitted her poetry collection, Songs of Love and Life, to publisher George Robertson in 1917, he didn’t even bother to read it, simply dismissing it out of hand. It was only after another smaller publisher had put out a modest run of the book that Robertson decided he did want to publish it after all. The other publisher sold the rights to him without even consulting Zora. The first run of the book sold out within three days, and a newspaper noted, “Some critics say it is the most promising poetry that has come out of Australia for a generation.”
