Although Eileen Guppy worked in the field for 43 years and had a Bachelor of Science in geology, she was only recognised as a geologist for three of those years. Instead she held the common “women’s” titles of secretary and scientific assistant, only promoted to assistant geologist in 1943 because of the loss of male staff to World War II. She was promptly demoted when the men returned in 1945. She worked for almost four decades at the British Geological Survey, yet she was almost never credited for her contributions to publications and reports.
