In many instances of collaboration between spouses, it is unclear how much of a woman going uncredited may have been their own choice for practical reasons—the best of less-than-ideal options… Hilda Petrie worked with her husband, the renowned William Flinders Petrie, “but she never published anything in her own name, and her contributions were never formally acknowledged. Her husband wrote the reports, headed the excavation teams and garnered all the credit for their finds,” notes Lynne Olson in Empress of the Nile, a biography of another woman in the field.
