The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.

Italian artist and writer Bianca Pucciarelli Menna didn’t just use Tomaso Binga as a pseudonym—she incorporated the identity into her work. Menna initially chose the male pseudonym to parody patriarchy and the privileges it bestows upon men, which they often take for granted. Binga evolved into an alter ego that she used to challenge gender stereotypes. In a 1977 performance piece, she invited guests to attend a “wedding” between Bianca and Tomaso, with guests bringing cards and gifts to create an ever-changing installation, while the androgynous artist attended the ceremony in a white suit.
