This Day in History: 1927-08-16

The Dole Air Race begins from Oakland, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, during which six out of the eight participating planes crash or disappear. One of these was 22-year-old Mildred Doran, in her eponymous plane, the Miss Doran, which disappeared and has never been found. Mrs. William P. Erwin also participated in at least one leg of the race with her husband, but was not onboard when his plane later disappeared.
