South African activist; in September 2000 she was appointed Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. She also served on the Bureau of the World Summit for Sustainable Development as an ex-officio member.

She was in charge of recruiting young people into the African National Congress to ensure that Umkhonto weSizwe (MK), the ANC’s military wing, had a steady supply of fighters.

A co-founding member of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), she was involved in political activism and promotion of the BCM in South Africa during the 1970s.
