When Shadrach Bond was elected a delegate to congress from the Territory of Illinois, his wife, together with her servants, sheared some sheep, washed, dyed and spun the wool, wove it into cloth, cut and sewed a suit for her husband, and accompanied him on horseback to Washington, the journey taking six weeks.
Shadrach Bond became the first governor of Illinois in 1818. Much of his success was due to his wife.
