In the case of Anna Sundström, who may be considered the first female chemist in Sweden, it wasn’t even her marriage that resulted in her termination. From 1808, she worked as assistant, laboratory superintendent, and supervisor of students for Jöns Jacob Berzelius, considered one of the fathers of modern chemistry. But after working together for almost thirty years, Sundström was fired after Berzelius married in 1836.
