Anna Swanwick, an English writer, translator, and philanthropist, born in Liverpool.
She early studied German, Greek, and Hebrew, and her translations of Aeschylus and of Goethe’s Faust rank as standard works. She also wrote several original books, though chiefly known by her translations.
Miss Swanwick was interested in many of the social and philanthropic movements of her day. She helped in the higher education movement, signed John Stuart Mill’s petition of Parliament for the political enfranchisement of women, and her career was notably stimulating to the feminism of her time. Her work was acknowledged by the University of Aberdeen, which bestowed on her the degree of LL.D.
