When lichenologist and mycologist Annie Lorrain Smith was first hired at London’s Natural History Museum, she had to be paid from a special fund because women could not officially be employed there. Initially brought on to curate a collection of microscopic fungi slides, she soon became responsible for identifying most of the fungi brought to the museum, working there for more than four decades.
