The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

The City College of New York’s first female MSc graduate in chemical engineering (1966) was Arlene A. Spadafino. ChE BE, ME, who was also their first female Lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department. From 1975 she was the technical secretary at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
Later, she was Director of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Codes and Standards Division, and from 1990 secretary to its Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards.
