In 2015, engineer Aruna Sankaranarayanan ran an analysis of streets named for people using OpenStreetMap data. It found that “Between Bengaluru, Chennai, London, Mumbai, New Delhi, Paris, and San Francisco, the percentage of streets named after women is an average of 27.5. Among the cities in India, Bengaluru tops the list with 39 percent of streets named after women.” That same year, feminists in Paris symbolically “renamed” 60 streets to honour women. They were protesting the fact that only 2.6 percent of the city’s streets were named after women—and many of the 166 women were wives and daughters of famous men, rather than accomplished in their own right. Roman geography teacher Maria Pia Ercolini analysed the city’s 16,500-plus streets in 2012 and found only 580 streets—just 3.5 percent—named after women. On March 5, 2020, the Secretary of State for Economic Transition in Brussels, Barbara Trachte, published an interactive map of the city’s street names. The data showed that only 6.1 percent of the streets in the Belgian capital are named after women.
