Augusta Gregory

Born: 15 March 1852, Ireland
Died: 22 May 1932
Country most active: Ireland
Also known as: Isabella Persse

Isabella Augusta, Lady Gregory was an Irish dramatist, folklorist and theatre manager who co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, and wrote several short works for both companies. Lady Gregory also produced several books retelling stories from Irish mythology.

Born into a class that identified closely with British rule, she developed as an adult noted support for Irish nationalism and Republicanism, and what she was later to describe as “a dislike and distrust of England”. This conversion, seen in her writings, was symbolic of many of the political struggles in Ireland during her lifetime.

Lady Gregory is primarily remembered for her work in the Irish Literary Revival. Her Galway home at Coole Park served as an important meeting place for major Revival figures, and her early work as a member of the board of the Abbey was as significant as her creative writing for the theatre’s development.
