Beverley Raphael was a psychiatrist who held chairs at the Australian and the Universities of Queensland, Western Sydney and Newcastle. Much of her research was centred on exploring psychiatric vulnerability, trauma, grief and preventive psychiatry. As President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists she was closely involved in the development of a national mental health policy. Raphael had a central role in the development of strategies for disaster mental health for Australia. Her expert advice was sought nationally and internationally. Her publications include The anatomy of bereavement: a handbook for the caring professions (1983) and When disaster strikes: how individuals and communities cope with disaster (1986).
