Catherine Cardy, BSc., cCT, MCIC, and the Chemical Institute of Canada’s first female chair (2006) is unusual in starting her career at the technician level. She graduated from Mohawk College in 1974 with a technician diploma in chemical engineering and worked in quality control for both routine and new product developments for Imperial Oil but she did not take a BSc until 1993 (University of Waterloo). Despite what most would regard as a ‘delayed’ qualification, Cardy was in leadership roles for most of that period, including taking labs through the demands of ISO certification and in 2002 won the Norman and Marion Bright Award for support of chemical technology.
