The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

Greek women were amongst the earliest nationality to qualify in chemical engineering and the extensive historic research done by the National Technical University of Athens, Pantouli and Batra (and Asimakopoulos et al, 2009) reveal that the nation’s earliest women to graduate from NTUA in engineering were Sofia Zarafidou (School of Surveyors in 1924) and in 1928 Chariklia Xanthopoulou-Tzonis (Χαρίκλεια Ξανθοπούλου) from the Department of Chemical Engineering. The latter’s first job was as assistant to the chair of Organic Chemical Technology of NTUA, but we know little more about her.
