Investigadora y académica mexicana. Realizó sus primeros estudios en la Escuela Anexa a la Normal de Maestros. Posteriormente, ingresó a la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ffyl (unam), donde obtuvo la licenciatura, así como la Maestría y el Doctorado en Letras.
Fue profesora de literatura en la Escuela Nacional Preparatoria enp (unam). En 1943, se incorporó al Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas iie (unam) como ayudante de investigación, mismo del que fue directora de 1968 a 1974 e investigadora emérita. También fue miembro de Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas iih (unam) de 1975 a 1978.
Destacó por ser la primera mujer miembro de la Junta de Gobierno de la unam en 1976, así como la primera mujer en ingresar en la Academia Mexicana de la Historia amh en 1974. En 1975, fue nombrada miembro correspondiente de la Real Academia de la Historia de Madrid rah. Fue designada miembro numerario de la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua aml el 24 de marzo de 1983 y tomó posesión el 13 de junio de 1985 de la silla xii. Fue vicepresidente de la Sociedad Defensora del Tesoro Artístico de México y miembro asesor del Comité de Arte del Instituto Mexicano Norteamericano de Relaciones Culturales. Se desempeñó como presidenta honoraria vitalicia de la Federación Mexicana de Universitarias femu.
Dedicó su vida a escribir la historia del siglo xix mexicano, rescatando la obra Juan Díaz Covarrubias y estudiando a Vicente Riva Palacio, entre otros autores decimonónicos.
Mexican researcher and academic. She completed her early studies at the Escuela Anexa a la Normal de Maestros (Teachers’ Training College). Later, she entered the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she obtained her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Literature.
She was a professor of literature at the National Preparatory School (ENP, UNAM). In 1943, she joined the Institute of Aesthetic Research (IIE, UNAM) as a research assistant, where she served as director from 1968 to 1974 and as an emeritus researcher. She was also a member of the Institute of Historical Research (IIH, UNAM) from 1975 to 1978.
She was notable for being the first woman member of the Governing Board of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1976, as well as the first woman admitted to the Mexican Academy of History (AMH) in 1974. In 1975, she was appointed a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History of Madrid (RAH). She was appointed a full member of the Mexican Academy of Language (AML) on March 24, 1983, and took possession of Chair XII on June 13, 1985. She was vice president of the Society for the Defense of Mexico’s Artistic Heritage and an advisory member of the Art Committee of the Mexican-American Institute of Cultural Relations. She served as honorary president for life of the Mexican Federation of University Women (FEMU).
She dedicated her life to writing the history of 19th- century Mexico, rescuing the work of Juan Díaz Covarrubias and studying Vicente Riva Palacio, among other 19th-century authors.
