Dewi Sartika (1884-1947) was a Sundanese advocate for and pioneer of education for women in Indonesia. In 1904, she opened a school named Sakola Istri at Bandung (Java), which later was relocated to Jalan Ciguriang and the school name changed to Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri (Wife Eminency School). By the year 1920, all of the cities and regencies had one Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri school, which later changed its name to Sekolah Raden Dewi.
Dewi Sartika was named a National Hero (Pahlawan Nasional) of Indonesia in 1966.
