Wikipedia’s crowd-sourced approach, where anyone can register and make edits, is the site’s greatest strength and, arguably, its greatest weakness. There is no central authority to appeal to when, for example, a new page is submitted and some anonymous moderator decides the person or topic in question is not noteworthy enough to warrant an entry. This is what happened when a user attempted to create a page for Canadian physicist Donna Strickland in March 2018, despite Strickland’s professional achievements. Only a few months later, Strickland became the first woman in 55 years to win the Nobel Prize in physics. For comparison, her colleague Gérard Mourou, with whom she shared the Nobel, has had a Wikipedia page since 2005.
