The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.
In 1924, Edith Lake Wilkinson was institutionalised at the age of fifty-six, and all her possessions packed away and sent to her nephew. The trunks remained untouched in an attic for decades until the nephew’s sister-in-law rediscovered it; it contained dozens of Wilkinson’s paintings. Some of those paintings are now held in collections at The Huntington Museum of Art and The Provincetown Art Association and Museum, while others were sold off by the family at garage sales, quite possibly never to be seen again. Her great-niece, Emmy-winning screenwriter Jane Anderson, is largely responsible for bringing Wilkinson’s work to public attention. Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson, a documentary co-written by Anderson, was released in 2015.
