Czech gymnast Eliška Misáková was selected to compete at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. However, she was diagnosed with poliomyelitis shortly after arriving in the city and was sent to Uxbridge Isolation Hospital, where she died four days later. The Czechoslovak team, which included her sister Miloslava, would go on to win gold. The sisters’ parents had also pre-deceased Eliška. The flag raised at the medal ceremony featured a black border of mourning and the International Olympic Committee awarded Misáková a posthumous medal, the only one in Olympic history.
