Born into slavery, Eliza Carpenter was a teenager during the U.S. Civil War and the subsequent emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. She moved to Kentucky, where she learned not only how to be a jockey but also about the business of buying and training race horses. She later moved to Kansas, and then on to Oklahoma, where census records would list her occupation as a livestock trader. At the time, she was one of few African-American stable owners, and won several races as a jockey, though her primary jockey was Olla “Lucky” Johnson.
