From Famous Women: An Outline of Feminine Achievement Through the Ages With Life Stories of Five Hundred Noted Women. Written by Joseph Adelman, published 1926 by Ellis M Lonow Company:
Flora Annie Steel, an English novelist, born at Harrow. In 1867 she married an India civilian, and for the next twenty-two years lived in India.
Her interest in the education of women, as an inspectress of schools, gave her a special insight into Hindu life and character with which her novels mainly deal. Some of her best work is contained in two collections of short stories: From the Five Rivers, and Tales from the Punjab, while her most ambitious effort was her novel, On the Face of the Waters (1896), describing incidents of the Indian mutiny. She also wrote a popular history of India.
