In February 2022, Chinese-American author Geling Yan published an article on the WeChat account of Survivors’ Poetry, a contemporary Chinese poetry magazine, expressing her rage at the mistreatment of women. The article soon disappeared from WeChat, and searches of Yan’s name yielded no results on Weibo, China’s largest social media platform. Weibo had also shut down several feminist accounts for “hyping up opposition between different groups,” and authorities had previously censored posts about sexual harassment.
