British-American actress and singer Greer Garson was a major star at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) of the 1940s, named one of America’s top-10 box office draws from 1942 to 1946 by the Motion Picture Herald. Garson was the fourth most-nominated woman for the Best Actress Oscar, with seven, including tying with Bette Davis for the record of five consecutive nominations from 1941 to 1945. She won for her title role performance in 1942’s Mrs. Miniver.
Before moving to Hollywood at the request of MGM’s Louis B. Mayer, Garson appeared on British stages and on television programs in their earliest years during the late 1930s. Her first film, 1938’s Goodbye, Mr. Chips, also led to her first Oscar nomination.
