Hilde Mangold

Born: 20 October 1898, Germany
Died: 4 September 1924
Country most active: Germany
Also known as: Hilde Proescholdt

The following is excerpted from Infinite Women creator Allison Tyra’s book Uncredited: Women’s Overlooked, Misattributed, and Stolen Work.

Hilde Mangold’s 1923 dissertation was “one of the very few doctoral theses in biology that have directly resulted in the awarding of a Nobel Prize” but she wasn’t the one who received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Instead, it went to her mentor, Hans Spemann, who used Mangold’s work as the foundation for “his” discovery of the embryonic organiser, which dictates early development. Mangold died at age 25, before her thesis results were published, meaning it is possible she would have shared the award had she lived—or not.
