It is also not uncommon for scholars to simply ignore women’s documents even when they do exist. In 2021, a book was published entitled The Howe Dynasty: The Untold Story of a Military Family and the Women Behind Britain’s Wars for America. Among these was Englishwoman Jane Strachey, whose husband was across the Atlantic Ocean in the midst of the American Revolution. As author Julia Flavell puts it, “The private correspondence of a middle-class English wife, they have been virtually ignored by historians of the home front in Britain during the American Revolution. Yet they open a unique window into the experience of ordinary British women. And their intimate tone, everyday detail and authentic chronicling of wartime events provide a fascinating parallel to [Abigail] Adams’ letters.”
