Active in both local and national cultural organizations, Jeannine Smith Clark received her undergraduate degree in German and English and a master’s degree in African studies from Howard University, and studied at the University of Wisconsin. She taught German at Sidwell Friends School and Dunbar High School, both in the District of Columbia. Her affiliations include the D.C. Urban League, the Historical Society of Washington, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Phillips Collection. She is a regent emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution, a past chair of the National Portrait Gallery Commission, and a director emeritus of the White House Historical Association.
