Racecar driver Julia Landauer noticed a similar issue with her support crew. When she started a season well, winning a few races, her team principal—the man who oversaw equipment preparation and helped communicate to mechanics what she, as the driver, wanted done with her car—congratulated her while also telling her he hadn’t expected her to do well. Landauer concluded he likely hadn’t been giving his best effort up to that point, particularly as her car started handling noticeably better after he made the comment, indicating that he and the mechanics were suddenly working harder for her.
