In June 2021, the board of directors at Brussels’s new Kanal-Centre Pompidou overruled the decision of the independent panel of experts selected to choose the museum’s inaugural artistic director. The board announced that Bernard Blistène, an older white man, would be joint artistic director alongside Kasia Redzisz, whom the panel had selected as artistic director. Blistène had gotten only four votes on the ten-person panel—the other six voted for Redzisz. There had been no indication that the board was considering two artistic directors until after Blistène lost. Within days, the backlash caused the board to back down, and Redzisz was installed as sole artistic director.
