Kate Josephine Bateman, an American actress. Her parents were both actors, and she appeared on the stage almost in infancy and exhibited unusual talent.
In 1862 she began her career in New York as Julia, Pauline, Juliet and Lady Macbeth. The following year she went to England, and made a great success in London by her impersonation of Leah, the Forsaken. In later years she appeared with Henry Irving in Macbeth and played the title rôle in Tennyson’s Queen Mary.
In 1892 she founded and conducted for years a school of acting in London.
