In Pakistan, Khadija Qureshi, former chairperson of the Chemical Engineering Department of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, gained her BEng in chemical engineering at MUET in 1990, followed by an MEng in environmental science (1996), and PhD in wastewater treatment (2008), making her the first woman in Pakistan to gain doctorate in chemical engineering. Her post-doctoral work at the University of Arizona (2013) was on ‘removal of arsenic from water with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibre’. Her academic career at MUET has seen her rise from demonstrator to professor and the first female chairperson of her department (2011).
