That same year and also in Florida, former deputy fire-rescue chief Latosha Clemons sued the city of Boynton Beach over a mural that was meant to honour her. Clemons, the city’s first African-American woman firefighter, was painted as Caucasian in her own mural. This wasn’t even the first time—in 2019, another city art project included a depiction of former fire chief Glenn Joseph, who was African-American and was portrayed as Caucasian. The repeat of such an issue was so embarrassing that the mural was removed the day after it was unveiled, and both the public art manager and fire chief were fired. “I’m hurt. I’m disappointed. I’m outraged,” Clemons told the Palm Beach Post in June 2020. “It’s been my heart and soul and my lifeblood to serve in the community where I grew up … this is beyond disrespect and I basically want to know why it happened.”
