The following was written by Nina Baker and is excerpted from the book From Alchemy to Transport Phenomena: A Global History of Women in Chemical Engineering.

Two African-American women are mentioned in the literature as ‘firsts’ to get chemical engineering PhDs: Abron in 1972 (Iowa) and Patrick in 1979 (MIT). Lilia Ann Abron’s chemistry BS and sanitary engineering MS led to her PhD on reverse osmosis to remove DDT and Aldrin from water and her career on a wide range of environmental engineering and sustainability projects.
Jennie R. Patrick worked in both industry and academia, taking particular care to mentor young women in her field. Her work has focussed on supercritical extraction and behaviours of superheated fluids and energy efficiency.
